Lessons from the Lighthouse

Updated: 4 days ago

Being Human with Madzines

Lighthouses have long been seen as beacons of hope and recovery in mental health: landmarks for all those looking for landfall. What can we learn from actually encountering a lighthouse?

Visiting the lighthouse back in the summer when the tides were low.

Zine Making Workshops @ Storeys. Wed 23 & Thur 24 October 10 - 2pm

Soon, Plover Scar, will be leaving its rocky outcrop at the mouth of the River Lune, with the help of costume maker extraordinaire Wendy @ Revamp Racoon.

During October Half Term, the lighthouse will be at our Zine making workshops at the Storeys during Explore Week  21st - 25th Oct.

We’ll be thinking about how we can respond creatively to the challenges of being human?  Neurological research suggests we need to let our minds wander.

The workshops will offer a playful space to spark inspiration, to make comforts and warnings for our resident lighthouse, Plover Scar, to hand out during Light Up Lancaster.

Light Up Lancaster. Friday 8 Nov  6 - 9pm.

Follow the lighthouse when it takes to the streets during Light Up Lancaster ( 7th -9th November 5-10pm )

The light will dispense the illuminations that we generate. These markers, guides, comforts and warnings, created by citizens of our city, will be given freely to all.

MadZine takeover @ The Gregson. Saturday 9 Nov 2 - 4.30pm

On Saturday the light’s wanderings will take it to the Zine Library at The Gregson.

There it’ll launch a Madzines Project takeover, where everyone can share reflections on being and becoming human, and expand horizons over tea and cake, with the lighthouse and the Madzines team.

This project is in collaboration with Madzines.org, Skear Zines, The Zine Library, Revamp Racoon and, we've collected other partners along the way, Good Things Collective, The Gregson and Light up Lancaster.

The Being Human Festival aims to celebrate and demonstrate the ways in which the humanities inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and the challenges we face in a changing world. The theme for 2024 is Landmarks from which this project has emerged.
